Set in the South Pacific during World War II, this musical romance follows a group of American sailors and Navy nurses. Nellie Forbush, an Arkansas native, forms a close bond with Emile de Becque, a French expatriate and plantation owner. Meanwhile, Lt. Joe Cable embarks on a passionate affair with Liat, the daughter of Bloody Mary, a local grass-skirt peddler. As the war intensifies against Japan, both Forbush and Cable confront the realities of their unconventional relationships, grappling with deeply ingrained prejudices and personal insecurities.
