About
Staind builds songs around a heavy, riff-driven core and Aaron Lewis's voice, which can move from a low, bruised croon to a full-throated roar inside a single chorus. The writing is direct and unguarded, and the band has never been much interested in disguising what a song is about.
The sound sits where alternative metal, nu-metal and post-grunge overlap: downtuned guitars, hooks kept short, and a rhythm section that stays out of the way of the vocal. That combination made the band enormously popular in the early 2000s, and the softer, more melodic end of the catalogue sits alongside the heavier material rather than having replaced it. Lewis has also worked at length outside the band in country music, and that plainness has fed back into how he writes.
What holds it together is the absence of artifice. Staind songs are about being angry, tired or wrecked, and they say so; the volume carries the sentiment rather than hiding it.
