About
One Day - The Musical returns to the same date, the fifteenth of July, for twenty years, checking in on two people who met the night they graduated and then spent two decades circling each other. Emma wants to do something that matters. Dexter wants to be famous. Neither is any good at saying what they want from the other.
The structure is the engine: one day a year, a snapshot, then a jump forward. In the gaps, careers rise and collapse, relationships begin and fail, and the friendship resets each time to something almost but not quite romantic. Emma drifts through jobs she is too clever for and writes nothing. Dexter becomes a television presenter and loses himself in it. What happens offstage does as much work as what happens on it.
The musical is adapted from David Nicholls's 2009 bestselling novel, which is built on the same annual conceit. The stage version opened in 2026. It keeps the one-day-a-year structure intact and uses song where the novel used interior monologue, giving Emma and Dexter a way to voice the things they never manage to say to each other out loud.
It is funny for a long stretch and then it is not, and that turn is the point. The show is interested in ordinary wasted time - the years spent with the wrong person, the ambition deferred, the conversation postponed - and in how much of a life turns out to be made of days that felt unremarkable while they were happening.
It will land hardest with anyone who has a friendship that never quite resolved, or who has looked back at a decade and wondered where it went. Live, the annual jump forward hits harder, because the audience watches the same two people change in front of them.
