Churchill and Roosevelt - The Christmas That Saved The World stages the weeks in December 1941 when two leaders shared a roof, argued over strategy and worked out whether they could trust one another. The war had just changed shape. What the two of them settled in those rooms shaped everything that came after. The play keeps to the private side of the meeting: late nights, a great deal of drink, a warmth neither man entirely trusted, and hard disagreement about where to fight first and who would carry the cost. One is a practised performer running short of options. The other is a careful politician managing a public that has only just stopped arguing about whether to be involved at all. The alliance gets assembled in conversation, almost by accident. It is written by David Payne, from the team behind an earlier solo play about Churchill, and it delivers its history through argument rather than narration. It suits anyone who enjoys watching two large personalities negotiate in a small room, and anyone curious about how consequential decisions are actually arrived at - slowly, rudely, and between people who are tired.
