Covenant - Play

Covenant opens with a guitarist coming home a star, a few years after leaving with nothing, playing better than anyone can account for. The rumour arrives with him: that he met someone at a crossroads at midnight and traded something for the talent. The play is less interested in whether that is true than in what the story does to the people repeating it.

What follows is a chamber piece for five - the returning man and the people who knew him before he left. The talk starts as gossip, tightens into suspicion, and then into something none of them can take back. Every one of them is holding something, and the play deals the secrets out one at a time, each reversal landing a beat before anyone watching is ready for it.

York Walker wrote it, and it had its world premiere in 2023 through a programme dedicated to first professional productions by new playwrights. It draws on a durable piece of blues folklore - the bargain struck at a crossroads - and on the older tradition of the ghost story told at a kitchen table, where the frightening thing is never the devil but what the neighbours have decided to believe.

It works as horror with almost no apparatus: no effects to speak of, just five people, a rumour, and a room that keeps getting smaller. The dread comes from belief rather than from anything supernatural being shown, which is the harder trick and the more effective one.

It is for anyone who likes a ghost story that takes its characters seriously, and for audiences who would rather see a new play than another revival. Live, with nothing between the room and the rumour, the final turn has nowhere to go but out into the audience.
