About
Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York) begins at an airport arrivals gate, where an English twenty-something flying in for his estranged father's wedding is met by the bride's sardonic younger sister. Neither of them wants to be there. Between the pair and the wedding lie one large cake and one very long day.
He is relentlessly optimistic, has barely travelled before, and has built his whole idea of the place out of films. She has lived there all her life and has no patience for any of it. Across a single day of trains, diners, snow and delays, the two argue their way towards something neither expected, and the cake turns into both an errand and a running joke about how much people will carry for one another.
Jim Barne wrote the music and Kit Buchan the book and lyrics. The piece began under a different title in 2019 at a regional theatre, picked up early recognition for its writing, and was substantially rebuilt for a 2023 revival that carried it forward. It is written for two performers and a small band, and the pair sing almost continuously.
The score is melodic and conversational, closer to indie pop than to traditional show tunes, and the writing keeps sliding between comedy and something quieter underneath. It is a romance, but a wary one: both characters are carrying more than a cake, and the show is honest about how long it takes two people to admit as much.
It suits audiences who like small-cast musicals with big feelings and fast dialogue. It lands best live, where two performers holding a whole room for an evening is the entire trick.
