Emei writes bright, loud pop that keeps one foot in rock, built on guitar, live drums and a voice that never sounds tentative. The arrangements pile up rather than thin out, stacking hooks against crashing instrumentals, and her delivery carries a dry, sarcastic edge that cuts against how big the production gets. The songs work in specifics, a small humiliation, an impatient thought, a self-criticism said out loud, and the melodies are pitched to be sung back rather than admired. She started singing as a child and trained early, placing third on a televised singing contest in her mid-teens before relaunching herself for an English-speaking audience. A run of singles led to the EP End of an Era, written around finishing university and the awkward stretch that follows. She has described working at volume, dozens of songs in a year, and cutting lead vocals the same day she writes them so the first take keeps its nerve. That immediacy is what the live version trades on. The material is guitar-forward enough to hit hard in a room, the choruses are built for a crowd to carry, and the wry voice in the writing is the same one between songs. It is pop for listeners who want the hooks without the polish smoothing out the personality, and who recognise the particular mix of ambition and self-doubt she keeps returning to.
