About
The Cherry Orchard brings a family home to an estate they can no longer afford, with the auction already scheduled and a workable plan on the table that nobody is willing to discuss. The orchard is famous, beautiful and worth nothing, and everyone would rather talk about something else.
Ranevskaya comes back from abroad, broke and charming, to a house full of people waiting for her to decide something. Lopakhin, whose family were serfs on this land, has a proposal that would save the estate and destroy the orchard. The daughters make plans, the tutor makes speeches, the old servant is forgotten in a corner, and the date of the sale keeps coming closer while the household arranges a party.
Chekhov finished the play in 1903, shortly before his death, and it was first produced in 1904. He called it a comedy; its first director staged it as a tragedy, and the argument between those two readings has been running ever since, which is one reason it is revived so persistently.
Almost nothing happens and everything changes. The comedy lies in the evasions: characters talk past one another, propose and fail to propose, and mistake nostalgia for a plan. The sound of the axe at the end lands as hard as it does precisely because everything before it has been people declining to say what they mean.
It suits audiences who like character-driven drama where the pressure sits under the surface. It works best live, where the silences and the overlapping talk do work that no summary can carry.
