Love Comes Softly - The Musical

Love Comes Softly leaves Marty Claridge widowed on the wagon trail west, a long way from anyone she knows and with winter closing in. The one road out of it is a marriage of necessity to Clark Davis, a homesteader she has barely met, and neither of them expects the arrangement to turn into anything more.

Marty and her husband Clem set out for land of their own and the life that was meant to come with it. Grief and a hard frontier are what she is left holding instead, and getting through comes down to the kindness of neighbours she did not choose. Two more love stories run beside hers: an older couple who each buried a first spouse and married again, and two young people falling for the first time.

Janette Oke published the novel in 1979, the first of eight books that later reached the screen. Christy Chavers Stutzman bought the stage rights and spent two years writing the book, music and lyrics, and the musical had its world premiere in 2024 at the Round Barn Theatre in Nappanee, Indiana. Stutzman also wrote and composed When Calls the Heart - The Musical.

The score reaches for Golden Age Broadway and points it west: wide ensemble numbers, dance tunes with real bounce in them, ballads that carry the grief, and a barn raising that brings the whole company on at once. Children and teenagers are written into the script, so the settlement on stage has the shape of a real one. Faith, generosity and plain neighbourliness are the substance.

This is for readers of Oke and for families who want a story in which kindness is the plot rather than a moral fixed on at the end. Sung live by a full company, the prairie sounds a great deal less empty.
