Clyde's takes place in the kitchen of a roadside sandwich shop where everyone on the line has a criminal record, because it is the only place that will hire them. The owner runs the room by humiliation. The cooks stay because they need the work, and because one of them has persuaded the others there is something here worth making well. Montrellous treats the sandwich as a discipline: ingredients proposed aloud, combinations argued over, each attempt aimed at something perfect. The others join in almost against their will. Around the invention, the rest of life presses in - parole conditions, children they are not allowed to see, rent, and a boss who reappears at intervals to remind them exactly what she thinks they are. The kitchen becomes the only place any of them is taken seriously. Lynn Nottage wrote it. She is the only woman to have won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama twice, for Ruined and for Sweat, and this play grew out of the same research that produced the second of those. It premiered in 2021 and was nominated for Tony Awards the following year. It is a comedy with a hard floor underneath it. The banter is fast and genuinely funny, but the writing never pretends these characters have options they do not have. Clyde herself is pitched somewhere between a boss and a demon, and the play keeps her deliberately half-real. It is for audiences who want a play about work, and about how people assemble dignity out of whatever is to hand. Live, the rhythm of the kitchen - the chopping, the plating, the bell - does half the storytelling on its own.
