Dax

Dax is a rapper and songwriter who writes as though he is talking someone through something. His songs are built around a single argument, taken at speed and stated plainly, and they lean on the kind of directness most rap keeps back for a closing verse.

The delivery is dense and syllable-heavy, closer to recitation than to groove, and the production is kept deliberately simple so the words carry: piano figures, sparse drums, a hook sung rather than rapped. The writing circles faith, masculinity, grief, self-worth and the things people find hardest to admit, and it is usually addressed to one person rather than to a crowd. He works in the second person far more than most rappers do.

He came to music from competitive basketball, and started out writing poetry and speaking before he ever rapped. He built the catalogue himself, putting tracks and videos out until the audience outgrew the platform, and has since released the EPs It's Different Now, I'll Say It for You and What Is Life? alongside the albums Pain Paints Paintings and From a Man's Perspective. Several of his singles are certified platinum, and one of them topped a country digital sales chart.

Onstage the writing does the work. He performs at the pace he records at, without softening the phrasing, and material that reads as confessional on a record turns into something closer to a shared statement in a room full of people who already know the words. He treats a crowd as participants rather than spectators.

This is rap for listeners who come to songs for the writing, and who want something said to them clearly and without armour. Dax has made that his whole method, and it holds up out loud.
