Heist - Play

Heist assembles a crew of professional thieves for one last job and then lets the plan come apart in front of the audience. Everyone at the table has a specialism, a grievance, and a private version of how the night is supposed to end.

The set-up is deliberately familiar — the recruitment, the briefing, the rehearsal, the thing nobody accounted for — and the play uses that familiarity to keep the audience a step behind rather than a step ahead. Loyalties shift, one double cross uncovers another, and the pleasure lies in watching a very tidy scheme collide with people who cannot help themselves. Arun Lakra wrote it, and the dialogue does most of the work that editing would do on film.

This is a new play receiving its first production, made in collaboration between several theatres. It suits audiences who enjoy caper stories and want to see the genre attempted with actors, timing and a set rather than cuts and camera angles, and it works best live, where the reveals land on a whole room at once and nobody has the option of rewinding.
