About
All the World's a Stage follows a closeted high school maths teacher in a small town in 1996 whose careful, compartmentalised life tilts when a student asks him to coach her for a statewide theatre competition. The piece they choose is Angels in America, and the town notices.
Rehearsals become the one place either of them can be honest. He has spent years keeping the parts of his life apart; the student has never been given permission to be strange out loud. As word spreads about what they are staging, local sympathy hardens into something colder, and the two of them have to work out how much of themselves the work is worth.
Adam Gwon wrote the book, music and lyrics, following earlier chamber musicals including Ordinary Days. Commissioned and developed over several years, the show reached its first production in 2025. It is written on a deliberately small scale: a handful of characters, an intimate score, and songs that grow out of conversation rather than interrupting it.
This is a story about theatre told by people who believe in it, and that belief is the engine. The comedy is dry, the arguments are real, and the moment a teenager finds a monologue that says what they cannot is the kind of scene musicals exist for. The politics are not decorative here; they cost the characters something.
All the World's a Stage is for audiences who like their musicals human-sized and pointed, and for anyone who once had a teacher who made room for them. It is warm without being soft, and it argues that art is worth the trouble it stirs up.
