About
Pippin follows a young prince convinced that an ordinary life would be a wasted one. A troupe of players gathers to stage his search for something extraordinary, and the Leading Player who guides them promises a finale the audience will not forget. Pippin sets out to find what will make him exceptional.
He tries war and finds it squalid, tries pleasure and finds it hollow, tries politics and discovers that governing well is duller than seizing power. Each attempt is presented as a number, applauded, and then dismantled. When Pippin finally lands somewhere quiet and unremarkable, the troupe grows impatient, because that is not the ending they have been building towards.
Stephen Schwartz wrote the music and lyrics, Roger O. Hirson the book, and the musical first reached the stage in 1972. Its opening run lasted years, and a later revival reimagined the players as a circus company, an idea that has shaped how the show is staged since. It remains widely licensed and frequently produced.
The score moves between vaudeville, pop and pastiche, and the show never lets anyone forget they are watching a performance. The players flatter Pippin, then undercut him. The comedy is bright, the manipulation is constant, and the final turn asks what a person will trade for a single moment of glory.
It suits audiences who like musicals that argue with themselves: big numbers, sharp irony, and an ending that refuses the easy version. Its questions about ambition and contentment land differently depending on the age of the person watching.
