Shwayze is a rapper who trades speed for melody, writing hooks that lodge fast and verses built to hold a story rather than a technical display. The music leans on sun-bleached, loose-limbed arrangements, with live guitar, reggae inflections and the occasional ukulele sitting where a hard beat would normally go. It is warm rather than aggressive, and the writing keeps circling summers, drifting, and the stretch of life where nothing has been decided yet. He broke through with a self-titled debut made inside a close writing partnership, a record that produced a pair of singles which still define the sound for most listeners. What followed widened it rather than repeating it: albums and singles that move between hip hop, rock and something closer to acoustic pop, including a run of quieter and more openly emotional songs. He has said he writes for durability rather than for whatever happens to be charting. Live, the catalogue does the work, because the songs were built to be sung along to rather than admired. The tone is relaxed and conversational rather than confrontational, and the material stretches across enough styles to keep a room moving in more than one direction. The audience runs from people who were there at the beginning to listeners who found the songs much later. It suits anyone who wants hip hop with the temperature turned down.
