About
aMontell Fish makes quiet, guitar-lit songs about wanting and losing, sung close to the microphone with almost nothing behind them. He writes, produces and records the music himself, and the result sounds less like a record being made than a room being overheard.
The sound draws on R&B, soul, hip-hop and gospel without settling into any of them: sparse arrangements, an electric guitar left ringing, drums that stay out of the way, and a voice that moves between a murmur and something closer to a hymn. The writing is plain on the surface and heavier underneath, handling grief, longing, doubt and faith as ordinary human weather rather than as doctrine.
He built the audience himself, posting music online from his teens, Christian hip-hop at first, then production tutorials and confessional videos, before the songs travelled well past the world they were written for. His catalogue includes the album JAMIE, ten tracks written around a breakup, and the EP Her Love Still Haunts Me Like a Ghost.
On stage the music keeps its intimacy rather than trading it for volume. Arrangements this spare leave the voice exposed, so the dynamics come from restraint, a held phrase or a guitar allowed to ring out, rather than from force. The effect is closer to being let in on something than being performed at.
It suits listeners who want their pop music unguarded: songs about grief and love that keep faith somewhere in the frame without preaching, made by someone who has never needed much more than a guitar and a voice to hold a room.
