About
Operation Mincemeat turns one of the strangest gambles of the Second World War into a musical comedy: in 1943, a small team of British intelligence officers dressed a dead man as a Royal Marines officer, filled his pockets with invented invasion plans, and floated him toward the Spanish coast hoping the enemy would believe him.
The plan is absurd, and the people carrying it out know it. A cramped basement office becomes a workshop for a fictional life: a name, a fiancée, a wallet of small human details convincing enough to fool a war machine. Rivalries flare over who owns the idea, class and ambition cut across every conversation, and the closer the deception gets to working, the heavier the invented man weighs on the people who made him up.
David Cumming, Felix Hagan, Natasha Hodgson and Zoë Roberts wrote the book, music and lyrics together, arriving from sketch comedy rather than musical theatre, and it shows in the show's willingness to break its own form. First staged in 2019, it draws on the documented record of the real operation rather than softening it. The strangest details are the true ones.
The score swerves between swing, hip-hop, power ballad and patter song, and a company of five plays dozens of parts across every line of rank and gender. The effect is deliberately unruly, jokes stacked three deep and the pace never letting up. Then the comedy drops away, a made-up life is grieved as if it were real, and the room goes very quiet.
It rewards anyone who likes history told sideways, comedy with real craft behind it, and a score that refuses to sit still. Live is where it works: five performers, a great deal of noise, and a true story that keeps turning out to be stranger than the joke.
