About
Creation Stories and All The Important Importants follows a Black woman at midlife who is pulled apart by every version of herself she has been asked to be: child, artist, future daughter, and the mother she has not decided whether to become. Mfoniso Udofia builds that argument as a folktale rather than a case study.
The play refuses a single timeline. It travels from ancestors to artificial intelligence, from dream cycle to IVF cycle, letting memory, myth and a medical appointment share the same scene. Music and ritual carry as much of the story as dialogue does, and the woman at the centre keeps meeting other selves who want incompatible things from her. What it costs to make something, whether a child or a body of work or a life, is the question the piece keeps circling back to.
Udofia is the playwright behind the Ufot Family Cycle, a nine-play saga that follows one immigrant family across decades and has also been adapted for audio. This piece grew out of a reading series before being taken up for full production, and it extends her long interest in inheritance, displacement and the stories families tell in order to explain themselves to one another.
The effect is closer to ceremony than to domestic drama. Scenes fold into one another, score and staging do narrative work that dialogue alone would not, and the audience holds several time periods at once rather than following a straight line. It is funny in places and unsparing in others, and it treats the decision about motherhood as something enormous rather than something to be tidied away by the final scene.
It speaks most directly to anyone who has weighed ambition against family, or who has felt watched by the generations standing behind them. Performed live, the ritual elements do what they cannot do on a page: they put the audience inside the reckoning rather than outside it.
