Il Volo

Il Volo is a vocal trio that sings with operatic technique over pop arrangements, and the collision is the whole point. Three voices trained to fill a hall without amplification are set against production built for a modern concert sound system, and neither side is asked to give way.

The group came together when three teenage soloists were put in a room by a television talent show and found that their voices blended in a way none of them had planned. Two tenors and a baritone give the trio a fixed internal architecture: a bright line on top, weight underneath, and a middle voice free to move to either. They sing mostly in Italian, which preserves the open vowels the technique depends on.

From that origin the trio moved to large-scale touring, televised song contests and a recording career that sells in numbers rare for anything adjacent to classical singing. Live, everything turns on exposure. The arrangements thin out at the moments that matter, and what fills the room is three people singing loudly, accurately and together.
