About
Candlelight: Tribute to Juan Gabriel on Strings arranges a vast Latin songbook for string quartet and plays it in a room lit by candles. These are songs written for a singer who delivered them with enormous rhetorical force; handing them to four instruments removes the rhetoric and leaves the writing exposed.
The writing turns out to be sturdy. The catalogue moves between ranchera, bolero and ballad, forms with their own rhythmic signatures and harmonic habits, and a quartet can render all three without translation. The mariachi violin line is already a string line, the bolero's guitar figures fall naturally to pizzicato, and the ballads are chord progressions before they are anything else.
Unamplified and by candlelight, the effect lands closer to chamber music than to tribute. The melodies are long and singable enough to survive without words, and the sentiment they were built to carry survives with them. Listeners who grew up with these songs hear them made strange again; anyone meeting them for the first time hears them simply as tunes.
