Pre-Existing Condition follows a woman through the months after her boyfriend hits her: the lawyer who is not interested, the therapist, the support group, the friends who mean well and the ones who do not. She is identified only as A. The play is about everything that happens after the incident other people treat as finished. There is no courtroom scene and no confrontation. Instead there are short encounters, one after another - an appointment, an awkward date, an attempt to tell her mother that keeps getting talked over. A asks the same questions in each of them and gets no usable answer. Was it her fault. What is she supposed to do now. Why does she still feel filthy. The structure is the argument: the aftermath is not one event but a queue of small ones. Marin Ireland, a working actor, wrote it as her first play and it premiered in 2024. The title comes from insurance history - before reform, some insurers classified injuries caused by domestic violence as a pre-existing condition and declined to cover the treatment. The play carries a lot of research lightly, mostly by putting the statistics in the mouths of people who are tired of repeating them. The writing is dry rather than harrowing, and a good deal of it is funny in a way that makes the subject harder rather than easier. The other characters are deliberately thin, three performers covering everyone A meets, so the weight sits on her and on how ordinary the obstruction is. Nobody is a villain after the first minute. It is for audiences willing to sit with a subject usually dramatised as one violent scene and then dropped. Live, with everyone in the same room, the discomfort is shared rather than watched, and that is what gives the fury near the end its force.
