Karol G makes reggaeton that swings between hard, hip-shifting rhythm tracks and songs that stop dead and go quiet. Her voice is conversational rather than showy, closer to speech than to belting, and it carries writing that is direct about heartbreak, self-worth and refusing to be made small. The catalogue is broader than a single genre. Reggaeton is the centre of it, but the records take in Latin trap, R&B, hip-hop and straight pop, and they tend to alternate between party songs and confessional ones. The words are plain and unguarded, and even the most danceable tracks are usually about something that hurt. That mixture is the reason the ballads land as hard as the club records do. Born in 1991 into a musical family, she performed from childhood and appeared on a televised talent contest as a teenager, then spent most of a decade working in a genre with very few women at the top of it before her first album arrived in 2017. Unstoppable, Ocean, KG0516, Manana Sera Bonito and Tropicoqueta followed, and the work has been recognised with both Grammy and Latin Grammy awards. The live show runs on the same contrast. It moves between full-tilt dance stretches, where an entire crowd moves as one thing, and passages where everything drops away and the room goes quiet enough to carry a single voice. Audiences arrive dressed for the occasion and sing the words back at her, and that exchange is plainly the point rather than a side effect. It suits anyone who wants reggaeton with the feeling left in: music built for dancing that keeps stopping to tell you the truth.
