Don Omar sings and raps reggaeton in a hard, declarative bark that cuts straight through the beat. The tracks are built on heavy synth riddims over a dembow pulse, and the hooks are melodic in a way that makes them stick long after the rhythm has stopped. His range inside the genre is wider than the style usually allows: dancehall-derived sing-rapping in one song, a bachata-leaning ballad in the next, outright dance-floor records elsewhere. Born in 1978, he came to music from preaching and worked as a writer for other artists before releasing his first album in 2003. King of Kings and The Last Album followed, and he was among the artists who carried reggaeton out of its first regional audience and into a far larger one. Live, the delivery is the whole point. The voice sits high and hard over the track, the crowd handles the call-and-response, and the pacing keeps the tempo up rather than breaking for reflection. It suits anyone who wants reggaeton from the generation that built it, played loud and delivered straight.
