About the Artist
“If you took away the money, the fame, and all the flash and left music, what would you have? Everything.”
Otis Sedgwick started playing guitar and busking in the New York City subway at 8 years old, writing songs and using music to help overcome the issues he faced with the bullies of the world. When he noticed the subway musicians of New York It was an instant love affair, and he decided he wanted to join their ranks. Without any further prompting he was off serenading the subway riders with the songs of Bob Dylan, Cat Stevens, The Beatles, Bob Marley, and of course his own original work. Now he’s grown up, and writing songs that bring his unique perspective of a youth spent soundtracking the grit and grind of the city to life.
As he got older Otis found inspiration in his hero Jimi Hendrix, wanting to create his own way of playing the instrument while thinking outside the box lyrically. Otis has written an extensive catalog of new songs, and sold out iconic venues such as The Knitting Factory, Webster Hall, Sidewalk Cafe, Drom NYC, and Arlene’s Grocery.
He has also made a name for himself at the prestigious Brooklyn Music School/Brooklyn Academy of Music where he has opened for Nels Cline, Sean Lennon, and Captain Kirk Douglas of the Roots. He’s performed alongside legendary jazz guitarist Mike Stern, and jammed with a little band called the Bacon Brothers.
