Ghost - The Musical

Ghost, the Musical begins with a young couple moving into a new flat and ends somewhere neither of them planned. Sam is killed in what looks like a mugging, finds that he has not actually left, and has to warn Molly about a danger she can neither see nor hear.

The only person who can hear him is Oda Mae Brown, a storefront psychic who has been faking it for years and is appalled to discover that she is not. Between them they have to work out who arranged Sam's death and why, while Molly grieves a man standing directly beside her. The whole show runs on that gap: he can see everything and touch nothing.

Bruce Joel Rubin, who wrote the 1990 film, wrote the book and co-wrote the lyrics; the score is by Dave Stewart and Glen Ballard, and it keeps the song most associated with the story. First staged in 2011, it has been produced internationally since. Illusion work is built into the writing, because the show has to put a man on stage who is no longer solid.

It is a love story with a thriller inside it and a comedian in the middle. Oda Mae takes the show over every time she appears, the ballads are unashamed, and the effects belong to the storytelling rather than sitting on top of it. The ending does what the film's did, and audiences still come out wrecked.

Ghost is for people who know the story and want to feel it again with a band in the room, and for anyone who likes a musical that commits completely to its emotions.
