The Karate Kid

The Karate Kid puts a familiar story on stage: Daniel LaRusso, new in town and out of his depth, is taken in hand by Mr Miyagi, a handyman who teaches him that karate begins long before the first punch. What starts as self-defence turns into an education in patience.

Daniel is a teenager with no footing - a mother starting over, a school he does not fit, a group of boys who have decided he is prey. Miyagi is a widower with a past he keeps to himself. Their bargain is simple and strange: wax the cars, sand the floor, paint the fence. The lessons look physical, but what is really being taught is how to stand still under pressure and how to choose when to fight.

The musical is adapted from the 1984 film by Robert Mark Kamen, who wrote the original screenplay, with music and lyrics by Drew Gasparini. It first reached the stage in 2022 and has been reworked since. It leans hard on movement: the training sequences and fights are choreographed rather than mimed, so the storytelling runs through the body as much as through the score.

This is a show about mentorship, and it plays that relationship straight. The big ensemble numbers carry the noise of school corridors and tournament floors, while the quieter writing belongs to the two people at the centre. Underneath the famous kick is something gentler: a boy learning that dignity and winning are not the same thing.

The Karate Kid is for families, for anyone who knows the story by heart, and for anyone meeting it for the first time. Performed live, the training and the fighting land differently, because the effort is happening a few metres away.
