Testament

Testament play thrash metal built on scything, tightly locked riffs, with songs that set blunt force against arrangements worked out in detail. The lead guitar lines run to real technical difficulty, and the vocals move between a deep, rasping growl and a clearer melodic delivery without losing weight.

The band formed in the early 1980s under a different name, part of the thrash wave that turned speed and precision into a genre of its own. Through many changes of personnel the writing has held to the same principles, taking in traditional heavy metal and colder, darker strains of the music while keeping the riff at the centre. Critical standing has long sat close to the genre's most celebrated names.

Onstage the band works at full tilt, tight enough for the intricate passages to read clearly at speed and heavy enough to set the floor moving. Long service has made them a fixture near the top of metal bills, and the sets carry the authority of a group that keeps the material sharp rather than treating it as heritage.
