Dear Jack Dear Louise

Dear Jack, Dear Louise begins with a letter written on a suggestion from two fathers who think their children ought to meet. He is an army doctor posted a long way from home; she is a dancer trying to get work on the stage. They never share a scene, and they fall in love anyway.

The whole play is the correspondence. She is quick, ambitious and very funny about her auditions; he is careful, formal and slowly undone by her. The war moves him wherever it wants him, letters cross and go missing, and the gaps between them begin to carry as much weight as the writing does. What started as duty becomes the most important thing in either life.

Ken Ludwig wrote it from his own parents' letters, and it was first staged in 2019 before being taken up widely. Ludwig is best known for large farces, and this is the opposite in scale: two performers, two writing desks, and a story assembled entirely out of what people are willing to commit to paper.

It works because the distance is real. The comedy comes from personality rather than situation, the sentiment is earned through restraint, and the moments when a letter goes unanswered land harder than any argument could. It is warm without ever being weightless.

Dear Jack, Dear Louise is for audiences who like small, well-made plays, and for anyone with a shoebox of family letters they have never quite been able to throw away.
