About the Artist
Liberation begins with a daughter sorting through what she was never told: that in the early 1970s her mother gathered a handful of women in a basement below a small-town recreation centre, week after week, to say out loud things they had not said anywhere else.
The women who arrive have little in common beyond the room and the hour. They talk about work, marriage, money, children, bodies and ambition, subjects for which there was no agreed language yet, and discover how much of what each had taken for private failure is shared. The group's arguments about what freedom would actually require are the engine of the play, and they are not tidied up at the end.
Bess Wohl wrote it as a memory piece. The daughter narrates, steps into her mother's place, and keeps interrupting her own reconstruction to admit where she is guessing. The play was first staged in 2025 and won the 2026 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. There is no score to lean on; the writing carries it, moving between comedy and something considerably less comfortable.
What stays with an audience is the doubling. The same women are shown as they were and as they are being remembered, and the distance between those two versions is where the play does its work. It is funny in the way real conversation is funny, and then it stops being funny, and the shift is deliberate every time.
It rewards anyone curious about how a political movement actually felt from the inside, and anyone who has tried to explain their own life to their children. It lands live because a circle of chairs puts the audience inside the group rather than outside it.
