About the Artist
Your Name Means Dream puts two women in one apartment: Aislin, who is old, sharp-tongued and finished with being looked after, and Stacy, the artificial caregiver her son has bought to look after her anyway. Neither of them intends to be changed by the other.
Aislin has already driven off a run of human aides. Stacy does not tire, does not take offence and does not leave, and she arrives running new software her makers call an approximation of soul. Over the months the two circle each other through insult, negotiation and dependence, until the question stops being whether the machine can pass for human and becomes whether the difference still matters to either of them.
José Rivera wrote the play and directed its premiere in 2023, and it has been produced steadily since. Rivera's work spans stage and screen, and the same instincts are at work here: a small domestic frame, dialogue that turns on a dime from comic to brutal, and a streak of the fantastical running under a realistic surface.
It is written for two performers, so the pressure sits entirely on the pair in front of you. The near-future setting is sketched lightly rather than built out, which keeps the attention on the relationship. The comedy is properly funny, the late turns are unsettling, and the play refuses to settle its argument on the audience's behalf.
Your Name Means Dream is for anyone who has cared for a parent, been cared for, or wondered what we will accept from a machine once we are lonely enough. It is intimate, funny and hard to shake off afterwards.
