On Your Feet

On Your Feet! follows a Cuban-American singer and the husband who believed in her act long before the industry did, from a family living room to arenas, and then through the accident that nearly ended everything.

Gloria Estefan is a shy girl singing for her father when Emilio first hears her; her mother wants her to finish her education; the record executives want somebody who sounds less like where she comes from. The show follows the argument they win by being right, and then turns, in its second half, to the bus crash that broke Gloria's back and the year of recovery that came after it.

The book is by Alexander Dinelaris, and the score is built from the Estefans' own catalogue, used as story rather than as a set list. It reached its first major production in 2015 and has been staged widely since, in several languages.

The dancing is the engine: Latin rhythms driven by a live band, big company numbers, and a horn section that tends to get its own applause. Underneath the party the piece is about immigration, family expectation, and what it takes to convince an industry that an audience already exists.

It suits audiences who want a jukebox musical with a real story attached. It works best live, where a room that starts seated and ends on its feet is the entire point of the design. The second half earns its emotion honestly, because the show has spent the first half making the audience like these people rather than simply admire the songs, and the recovery scenes are played without any sentimentality at all.
